“A quality coffee table book for all ages and enthusiasts for the outdoors“
Canadian photographer Hans-Ulrich Arnold believes the true beauty of landscape photography lies in its details. His first published book, Wish you were here: Photographic Images of the Canadian Landscape, is a celebration of the shapes, colors and textures that surrounds us. “It is easy to forget just how beautiful this country is,” Arnold said,“ I took these photographs to show how different this land can be and how we relate to it”.
He became interested in landscapes in the late 80's after a long career as a professional photographer. Wish you were here evolved out of a conversation he had four years ago while selling his framed prints at a trade show.“ It’s been my passion ever since,” Arnold said “ After that, I became a cloud chaser. I would see a beautiful sky and just jump into the truck. A lot of my photographs were taken off the beaten track, and I would just pack up my camera gear and head into the bush.”
Wish you were here is a collection of 140 color images of the Canadian landscape from Quebec to British Columbia. Unlike most traditional landscapes, Arnold’s photographs highlight the unique details of a particular location, whether it’s a mist shrouded mountain sunset or the weathered wood of a prairie barn. The images also capture the mood of each scene with eloquent poetry written by Ruth Couldwell, a Winnipeg writer and good friend.
“I’m a perceptive person,” Arnold said “I like serenity, color, light and shape. These images not only show the landscape the way I found it, they also capture the way the landscape made me feel. Ultimately, I think that people will look at this book, not just for the images, but for the emotions they convey. If the reader finds one photograph that captures their imagination or stirs a forgotten memory, then I have achieved what I intended and you will have made this book your own”. Wish you were here was officially launched in March 2002. |
